Digital passport photos: when you need a file

Some applications ask for a photo file instead of a print. Here is where that happens, the published file rules, and what stores charge for a digital copy.

When a digital photo is what’s asked for

ApplicationWhat the official source says
U.S. passport — online renewal“For online renewal, upload a digital photo to your application.”
U.S. visa — DS-160 / DS-1648The online form tells you to upload your digital image. Some embassies also ask you to bring one printed photo to the interview.
USCIS forms filed onlineIf passport-style photos are required, “you must either scan them or take a picture with your phone.”

The DS-160 digital image rules

From the State Department’s Digital Image Requirements page:

  • Square: height equal to width
  • 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels
  • JPEG, 240 kB or less, compression ratio 20:1 or less
  • Color, 24 bits per pixel, sRGB

For the U.S. passport online renewal, follow the upload instructions on travel.state.gov for that service. More on the visa upload: US visa photo upload.

Check or resize a file you already have

The free photo file checker compares format, pixel size, shape and file size with the published limits, and the resizer brings a file inside them. Both run in your browser.

Making the file on your phone

PhotoSpec guides the framing while you shoot, checks the photo, then crops it to the selected document’s size and saves the file.

  • Processed on your phone. Photos are not uploaded.
  • $3.99 per saved photo on Google Play. Shooting and retakes are free.
  • No ads, no subscription, no separate Pro version.

Upload portals set their own checks, and the issuing office makes the final decision on any photo.
