Why the cheapest number isn’t the whole story
- Prints or a file? Store prices are mostly for prints. For an online renewal, the State Department asks you to upload a digital photo — so what matters is whether you get a file, and whether it costs extra. See digital passport photos.
- Paper applications need prints on the right paper. The State Department says to print on matte or glossy photo-quality paper, and rejects photocopies, scans and photos printed on the wrong paper. If you use an app, add the cost of printing. See printing a passport photo.
- Retakes. At a counter you usually get the shot that was taken. In PhotoSpec, shooting and retakes are free and you pay when you save.
- Travel and time. The State Department lists “a friend or family member” among the people who can take the photo.
